Which Linux to put on the eight-year-old athlone?

Good health, dear habraanswerers!
Actually, approximately, no later than the other day, they should give me a computer with an Athlone processor, bought approximately eight years ago, for a gift. I don’t know the exact characteristics yet, but there are suspicions that it will be something from the Athlone 1100+ / 256Mb series.
I want to put it to my parents, let them play headscarf, and sometimes surf the Internet.
I don't want to install Windows, because, because. (Well, why not). Thinking of Xubuntu or Lubuntu.
But here the question is, will modern distributions normally pull this rarity, or is it better to look for something old?

The question should rather not sound like “an eight-year-old Athlone”, but “for 256 MB of memory”. Memory for the "kerchief" (that is, for the normal start of the OS and more or less comfortable work in it) is much more important than the processor (if you don't watch fullhd and don't play in a crisis :)).
IMHO - 256 meters to start a gnome and a scarf should be enough, but launching medium-sized applications (firefox, openofis, etc.) will lead to a lot of swapping.

Knoppix parents put on something similar. Works fine even with 3 sneakers

I would install Ubuntu, but only older, say versions 6, 7.

Everything flew for me on Athlon 650 MHz / 128 Mb under Gentoo. You can only compile up to 2 weeks.

Arch Linux bet on such good, only Gnome turned out to be heavy, put it as WM - windowmaker + goodies

Gotta pull. And if you catch up with the memory up to 512 - finally it will be chic.

asus eee pc - celeron 800MHZ (actual ~500), 512MB. set opensuse+Enlightenment. mozilla slows down, and you can code and play mahjong (kdeshny) without problems.

I'm sure it will pull. And if not, it's not hard to change.

PIII 933Mhz / 512 MB
Xubuntu quite pulled

I set my mom on Atlon 2200+/512Mb Ubuntu 10.04 for the same "tasks": solitaire/mahjong+Internet. It even pulls :) Although Xubuntu, in any case, performance should be higher.

Ubuntu will do, just put less nonsense during installation, display the necessary icons on the desktop. That's it, parents don't need more.

Install Elive or debian (even with gnome).

Search Google Yandex for the “Lightweight Linux” link ... recently there was an announcement on the opennet of some distribution kit with a fresh kernel - specially tailored for weak machines ...

Silly suggestion - but the android will not work? It is just imprisoned for weak iron.

Ubuntu with Gnome will definitely work, but rather slowly. Even if we assume that only Firefox will be used, the system will still work slowly. Proven in my own experience. Have pity on your parents - add at least up to 512 MB of memory.

I advise you not to install distribution kits with installed unnecessary services and programs.
My option is this - Debian testing through netinstall only the base system, and then install LXDE (you can also xfce), then iceweasel and a scarf. You can still openbox, but there you will have to work a little more with your hands - install the panel and configure the panel at least.

I would also recommend Chrome OS. This is not a Google OS, but some kind of SUSE with Gnome ("Chrome OS is not related to Google. Service provided by SUSE Studio"). Google Chrome Browser, main apps, etc. The beta can be downloaded from here: getchrome.eu/download.php . Runs very fast under 256 MW.

my brother once dealt with a similar question, I said that I would look, I searched a little and found a certain Vector:
Vector Linux is a GNU / Linux distribution for the x86 platform based on Slackware. Positioned as a stable, fast, lightweight distro that runs well on both old and new hardware.
True, it didn’t go further than writing to a disc, I didn’t apply anymore.

Installed Ubuntu 9.10 on Celeron 1.7 + 256MiB. Worked very well. Well, it's okay that I opened applications for a long time, but I worked fine with open ones.

The most important aspect is to add +256 or +512 MB of memory.
Then any absolutely modern linux distribution will fly.

For a long time I had Debian + LXDE on the atoll config 1.1 + 256 ram, later I switched to Lubuntu, I highly recommend it, especially after looking at alpha 10.10. Extremely friendly and slick.
