Which Linux to choose in VirtualBox?
VirtualBox offers to install one of the Linux systems. But I don't know which one is right for me. I want to play with Linux, I don't need it for serious tasks. The minimum load on the system is desirable. (The computer is not a powerful Intel Duo 2.80) I program mainly in Python (if this is important when choosing an OS). What do you recommend?
List of possible:
Linux 2.2
Linux 2.4
Linux 2.6 \ 3.х \ 4.х
Arch
Debian
openSuSE
Fedora
Gentoo
Mandriva
Red Hut
Turbolinux
Ubuntu
Xandros
Oracle

Virtualbox does not offer to install anything, it offers to make the virtual box config, which, in his opinion, is optimal for this system. Already an outdated possibility, on "Linux 2.6 \ 3.x \ 4.x" any modern distribution kit will get up.
To play around - it's better to have the OS that has the most developed community. Now it's Ubuntu.
The minimum load on the system - you can choose the Desktop Environment easier, this is Xubuntu - ubuntu + XFCE.
Or you can not install graphics at all, any normal IDE can connect to a host via ssh and work there. You will code under Linux without leaving your favorite Windows/macos.
Just play around - ubunta with some xfce (xubuntu) or mint cinamon Get a
little bit familiar with the system and study - Debian To blunt
to a good knowledge of the system Arch, Gentoo
Ubuntu server 14.04/32
VirtualBox will not install this system for you, but will only prepare a more suitable configuration.
When I just started picking linux, the recommendation was simple - the same as that of the guru whose questions you will kick. In fact, nothing has changed, except that the gurus have gone online. And one of the largest communities is now in ubuntu IMHO.
Although for the desktop, I personally prefer Mint.
As the saying goes, "To taste and color - felt-tip pens are different." Here you can always discuss what is better, what is worse. I prefer Ubuntu, someone CentOS... Here only you can choose. But still, a few tips: if you need an interface and not "heavy", then look towards an OS with an xfce shell, such as Xubuntu. If the interface is not needed, then you can choose server operating systems, such as Ubuntu Server. If you want a virtual environment for development, then we take Vagrant and any OS from the list .
