Which Linux distribution should I choose for my old Acer TravelMate 4222WLMi laptop?

The laptop is several years old, it has Windows XP installed, which is extremely slow. Reinstalling it does not affect performance in any way, newer versions of Windows are even slower. The laptop is used for working with documents, viewing photos, listening to music and surfing the Internet. In general, nothing supernatural.
Should I switch from XP to Linux, and if so, which distribution will give the best performance?
Also, perhaps the reasons for poor performance should not be sought in how compatible the OS is with hardware? If so, what should be considered and what can be done?

I advise Xubuntu 12.04 or fresh Xubuntu 14.04. Both should work well.

Checked Xubuntu 14.04. Speed unfortunately does not shine, but it is possible to work.
One big snag - the Software Center slows down incredibly, when you open it at work, you can put an end to the computer and safely reboot.
Then Elementary OS was installed - I liked it, it is simpler and visually more pleasant for me, but here the same garbage - the Software Center slows down incredibly, when you open it at work, you can put an end to the computer and safely reboot.
I have not tried Debian, but if these do not suit me, I will look at it and then unsubscribe, thanks for the recommendation.
I didn’t like Manjaro outwardly, in fact I didn’t look until I settled on Elementary OS, after all, as the most beautiful and at the same time simple: its simplicity is enough for me.
