Which lightweight code editor should you choose?

To start very quickly. So that F4 in TotalCommander is the default editor. And that, at a minimum, there should be syntax highlighting of at least the main languages.
I spent a very long time on Sublime. But it has such an unpleasant feature - it starts quite quickly, but then sometimes it starts to blunt with the loading of plugins (although I have relatively few of them). So VSCode is not an option at all. How is Notepad++ doing now?

Hello.
Notepad++ had its last release a little over a week ago, so it's quite alive.
There is also an option to use Atom (I didn’t use it myself, but many people praise it). Atom is actively developing now, and besides, it is open source. I can’t say how he has it with Total Commander, but I think there shouldn’t be any particular problems.
There is a Brackets editor from Adobe, but its support is ending soon.
These editors have both highlighting and extensions. You can look in their direction.

Try CudaText . Similar to Sublime, but much faster
