I got myself a DNS Airtab 975. It is cheap, android, with a retina, a 10-inch screen.
But it's heavy, you need to change the firmware to an alternative one, the native one is completely crooked.
Personally, I have a bad reader (from pockets with 10 inches of screen) and tablets. And at first I had a reader and read from it. Of course, I heard enough of motives from advertising. And then I bought a tablet and I don’t remember about the reader for two years already. Lies gathering dust. The tablet is incomparably more convenient.
And, I repeat, the pockets are on chameleon colored eink screens.
Catastrophic ... In general, the pockets have brought (in my opinion) the color reproduction in grayscale to perfection, squeezed out everything that eink can give out and even more. However, even they fail to display normally, for example, scanned books or magazines that are fond of colored backgrounds. The destiny of einka is specially prepared books, bare text, b / w diagrams. In my opinion b/w eink is no longer suitable for anything. The chameleon eink is certainly better, but the color .... well, not the whole gradation. With backlit screen a little better. But having played in the store for me personally, it is unacceptable for comfortable reading of arbitrary works. The same photocopies of old books or glossy magazines. Doesn't pull out yet.
Moreover, now I think that an 8-inch tablet without a retina is more convenient than the latest eink. The only thing is that it would be better if there was an IPS matrix, well, TFT is now a rarity even in low-end tablets. Well, there is only enough charge for a day.
Why did I get attached to the pockets ... there are enough glitches and weak cleaning of the firmware, and the same Kindle or Sony is not an example better, but the pocket is omnivorous. It reads everything that is possible, while others often have to convert.

It took me a long time to choose. If technical literature, then 90% in pdf or djvu... And if so, then 5" will not work!!! I accidentally found a rare 7" Sony. If in a horizontal position, then it's still normal. But since They don't make 7 inches now :( then only 9 ...

I used ONYX for about 2 years, unfortunately I don’t remember the model anymore, in terms of readers it’s more or less convenient to work with PDF due to the presence of a touch screen. After it broke down, I searched for a long time, stopped to my surprise on a Samsung tablet. Large screen, working time when reading about 2 days (I read a lot, a lot). Much more comfortable work with PDF, it is much more convenient to look at images, if the literature is coder, you can quickly kill something without leaving the cash register. For about 3 months I was looking for a replacement for onyx and I don’t regret it, especially with the current price tag (good onyx 13-14 against a tablet 19-20).
