Which distribution is suitable for a netbook?
There is a weak laptop with 2 GB of RAM and is mainly used for writing various scripts, systems in PHP, and so on. All that is actively used is a browser, an editor, a local server... All this is interchangeable, although sometimes you need to run some kind of WINDOWS program.
So, advise the LINUX distribution kit, which has no unnecessary configuration problems, the ability to install the WIN emulator and is the best in terms of speed + performance.

Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Debian with xfce/lxde.
But you need to be prepared that you won’t be able to use any modern browser - I now have chromium open with a dozen tabs, it eats 3.5 GB.
you need to run some kind of WINDOWS program
voyagerlive.org
Very decent nimble and beautiful in places not everywhere convenient from the box.
There are many videos on how to finish it for yourself.
Under the hood is the usual Ubuntu - the student will even figure it out)
I thought that in our time 4 GB is already the last century, you have a big scope with 2 GB
To run a windows application on Linux, you will need to install a virtual machine. It will be hard for your netbook with 2GB of RAM.
And you can install Arch-linux and choose a graphical shell for yourself.
Debian is also not heavy if you choose an assembly for yourself.
There is a similar topic and situation - here . I checked the work of a netbook (1GB of RAM), Fedora 23+LDXE worked best (I didn’t consider Ubuntu, but I’m sure it will also work well), Win 8.1 32bit Embedded worked relatively well (+ services turned off).
