Which cheap/primitive GSM modem to choose?
Hello! Before me was approximately the same task as in this post GSM modem with an API for receiving SMS . Previously, I did not encounter such tasks. For me, the most difficult thing now is the GSM modem.
I found the following as an option: www.odduino.com/shop/373/desc/gsm-gprs-modul-sim800l , but I don't understand how to connect and configure it to a PC. (Does this require an arduino?)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Yes, like any GSM-"whistle"-modem from OpSoSa. It, like the good old Internet and fax modems, works through AT commands. Decide on the OS, then look for the software for your needs.
You probably mean GPRS modem (GSM - voice transfer protocol , modem - data transfer device ). Today, the market is mainly 3G modems. Pure GPRS can even cost more (this is a rare legacy and if the buyer has no choice, then he pays as much as they ask). But there is a simple solution - (almost) any old phone with a USB cable (the connector on the phone itself may not look like USB) can be put into AT-command mode (the main mode is an external drive) and used as a GPRS modem.
- the cheapest is a usb whistle, but there may be problems with AT commands (some require flashing / unlocking and other dances with a tambourine)
- modems that support GSM0507, GSM0707, such as cinterion, irz and similar, are usually stuck in the comport. but they are not cheap.
- modules like SIM900, SIM800, telit, etc. They need adapters to attach to a computer. Cheap but not for everyone
I have an old dir-320 router with an E1550 3g modem. Openwrt is installed on the router + a flash drive is used in the modem as extroot. Raised Asterisk. It is used as a GSM-SIP gateway, in addition it receives sms and sends them using ssmtp and mutt to mail. Everything works autonomously and is quite stable.
Standard Baline modem huawei E3131 + Beeline Usb-Modem program.
A very big plus is that all data is stored in the SQLite database. Database without a password.
+ The program itself combines large SMS.
- binding to the operator.
The modem comes with a SIM card, which fits 3-4 sms. Therefore, a phone SIM card was bought.
Good luck.
