If you really want to get confused with a desktop in java, then the current technology for this now is the new Java FX, the one in jdk8. Swing successor.

agree with OnYourLips . java for detscope is not dead, no ... but very little demand .... better either java ee or android ─ there are more vacancies, and if you need swing, you learn quickly enough
