Better learn Python. Perl is either written for maintenance scripts for automation, for which a separate person is not needed, or they support legacy. You will be interviewed by oldfags 40+ who commit and maintain in CPAN. And you won't get off with one syntax.
In my opinion, Pearl is not the most promising language at the moment. I myself have been writing for a long time in PHP and I look towards Java.
