Where to install custom applications in Linux?

Where and why do you usually install custom Linux applications that are installed by extracting an archive and copying the contents?

If it's a whole package with its own directory structure, then in /opt/$pkg_name/ (then it's convenient to delete/update in bulk if anything), if it's a self-made script/resource, then in the appropriate place /usr/local/*/

A very interesting question. Nowhere have I seen detailed descriptions with examples on this issue. I have always unpacked such applications inside my home directory (for example, inside /home/ttyigor/programs). What is the disadvantage of this installation method?

If for the current user, then ~/.local(it repeats the /usr structure), and if "user" in the sense of being installed without a package manager, then /opt( /usr/localFHS to help)
