Where to download Gnome for Linux?

In general, I originally wanted to download Gnome Characters , but an error occurred:
./autogen.sh: 1: ./autogen.sh: autoconf: not found
*** WARNING: I am going to run `configure' with no arguments.
*** If you wish to pass any to it, please specify them on the
*** `./autogen.sh\' command line.
I've been thinking maybe Gnome itself needs to be downloaded first?
For Linux and Ubuntu one package goes?
