Where to download Gnome for Linux?

In general, I originally wanted to download Gnome Characters , but an error occurred:
./autogen.sh: 1: ./autogen.sh: autoconf: not found

I've been thinking maybe Gnome itself needs to be downloaded first?
For Linux and Ubuntu one package goes?
