Where is the best place to store a preview image for an article?

The site has an article with pictures and it has a preview picture made by hand.
The structure of the site for the article has its own folder, where all the pictures for it are located.
Is it good to keep article previews in the same folder? Will it show up in a search engine? How to do it right?

The search engine does not care at all in which folder you have pictures.
Whether it will be displayed depends on what is written around it, alt and whether it matches the searcher's request.

Why create a folder for each article?
It's better to store pictures in this form: ab/cd/abcd214345343452.jpg and it doesn't matter if it's a full-size picture or a preview.
There will be no problems with the file system.
