Where is .emacs hiding?

I decided to join the eternal and ... I can not find the settings file. Went to /etc, went to ~/emacs.d created an .emacs file in the latter and nothing happens. And do not google, yes.

You need to create it in the user's home directory.

Stored in a directory ~/.emacs.d/. The first time EMACS is launched, it will create it by itself if it does not already exist.
