Where did the vertical bar symbol go?

Hello. In the ubuntu server 12.04 console, instead of the vertical bar character, a tilde is printed, and instead of a tilde, some kind of “zagagulin” is printed (it looks like the letter “G”, only it lies on its side). Please tell me where to dig?
UPD: I reinstalled ubuntu - the same problem, in general I installed Centos and everything is in order.

Faced the same problem today. It turned out that everything was simple in Keyboard-> Layouts there was an English (UK) layout, changed to English (US) everything became as it should.

If the problem is related to the curved keyboard setting in xorg.conf, then this is how it is solved:
If in the terminal, then you can also google it.

Check the encoding in the SSH client (there really is something strange in putty) and the locale on the server itself (there should be something sane, like LANG=en_GB.UTF-8).
