I recently had a similar issue. Not one object was made on optics, but I didn’t come across GPON, and when I began to dive into the topic, I was very surprised that this existed, but I hadn’t heard anything about it at all! The main question was the same - what is the difference from the usual point-to-point connection via SFP. As it turned out, everything is simple. The meaning of GPON is that optical splitters are used, for example: https://shop.nag.ru/catalog/03493.opticheskie-deli..., which divide one fiber into several, and such a trick can be repeated, i.e. divide one fiber by 4, then each of the four by another 8 or 16, etc., but not infinitely, of course. The downside is that the bandwidth is also divided. Most importantly, special equipment is used at the ends of such a line. Better to show with an example. However, options are possible depending on the task at hand.
