Where can I find an algorithm for compiling crossword puzzles?

For a week now I have been trying to find a working algorithm for compiling crossword puzzles (needed for a pet project).
Input: list of English words.

There are algorithms on Github, but they work for a very long time, and most importantly, they do not give the desired result (a classic crossword puzzle so that words do not intersect and all cells are connected). There are also programs, but there are also few sensible ones.

Tell me, is there an open free algorithm or a database of ready-made crossword puzzles?
