Where can I find a quality manual for creating subtitles from scratch? Google gives a lot of garbage. What is the CORRECT way to start, so as not to waste time and effort in vain?

I want to learn how to create subtitles, but, ironically, there is too much information on the topic.
Based on Star Trek TOS.
How to approach the matter correctly?
