When is the best time to use git?

When is the best time to use git? While I use for myself I do not work in a team. I still don’t quite understand when to use it, for example, I made a header, created a comet, made a slider, created a comet, or decided to add some functionality to an already finished slider, did I create a comet before these? Are there any rules for creating a comet or can you sculpt it however you want?
