. If I edit the product file from the installed theme, then nothing happens at all. Modifiers updated.
If I edit the product file from the standard theme, then we get a white screen when entering the product card.

Look at the logs and look for the error. Although in general it is strange that you have somehow involved the tpl of the product from the standard template.
