What to study to have a piece of bread in the near future?
Hello. I am now 18, studying in college with a degree in computer systems and network maintenance. In the future I want to work as a programmer. Now I have some free time that I don't want to waste. At the moment I'm actively studying java (from books). I plan to continue to engage in self-study, so I’m interested in what to spend time and effort on, what and in what order to study (technologies, programming languages, development tools, etc.), how to make my learning more effective, what should I pay attention to?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

A bit of my bitter experience...
Once upon a time, I, like you, chose the direction and what to study. Now, after many years, I see my main mistake. It is like this - I spent too much time studying technology and too little projects. As a result, I have a lot of knowledge, but few completed projects that can be demonstrated.
My advice is simple - start working on your portfolio now. Choose a relatively small project, complete it and add it to your portfolio. Then move on to the next one, and so on. So in a few years you will have a good portfolio and experience in solving problems.
At 18, I doubt you're professional enough to compete successfully as a freelancer. You are just shown the office and the enterprise in order to get the best practices from the masters of their craft.
