on the frontend - this is js. And you on layout. Read on semantics, microformats, look at various methodologies (for example, the same BEM), and learn javascript.
I will share my own experience.
Read the DOMs of large sites, Google, Contact, Habr, Toaster, etc. Look at the implementation.
I myself sometimes do this, draw new ideas.
