What to read about setting up VDS?

Dear experts, please advise what should be read so that I can set up VDS on my own and understand when it is necessary to use it?
Situation - I'm a web developer, I have little experience (but not quite a beginner). Until now, the question of own server was not raised, I used hosting. However, there was a need to transfer some sites to their own server for the sake of memcached and more stable work (hosting drops from time to time, and the site owner needs stable work). And there will only be more such cases, so the option to "hire a specialist" is not suitable. Yes, and very interesting :)
My knowledge in this area is almost nothing. A bit of Linux administration with manuals. That is, the task of "transferring a site from hosting to your server while maintaining the domain name and speeding up work" - I am not ready to perform correctly.
I did not find anything intelligible, except for an article on Habré, which was minused by experts.

You can also look at the VPS.ua Wiki . There are not so many purely technical articles, but they write everything to the point.
