What to choose for a client-server application?

Hi all!
I have been programming for android for about six months. These are small toys, calculators and so on.
Now I want to write some kind of client-server application. I read about the REST API, I liked the idea itself. What is the easiest way for a beginner to start writing the server part? Not for specific purposes, but for the sake of practice.

Decide on a task. If you want to learn how to write a server - then Java + Spring, this will help you for an adnroid (broaden your horizons a little).
And if you just want to write an application with a server - take some parse.com, contentful and other cloud services. They are free in most cases for small loads.

If you just want to work with some kind of api, take the github api
if you learn how to write the server part, then you need to try what you like best
