And you go to their sites in the vacancies section and see what they want from a VFX specialist. Here is the list of ILM jobs: www.ilm.com/ilm-careers and here are the jobs at Weta Digital: https://www.wetafx.co.nz/jobs . In general, the lion's share of visual effects is done in Houdini. It also usually requires a lot of experience in Maya. Some studios don't care where you create effects and model, but Houdini and Maya for creating VFX are used everywhere by default. The rest of the software already depends on the specialization: NUKE for compositing, MARI for texturing, Renderman, Arnold and Mental Ray for rendering, Zbrush for sculpting, UV layout for creating scans.
