For starters, you need to be able to "google" without this, definitely an important skill, there is nothing to do in web design. Google usually ~ 60% of the workflow, on various issues, from monitoring a competitive niche, to finding refs for illustrations on the site, photos, icons and materials in general. Follow design trends so that now there are enough sites where you can do it RE:VISION , dribbble , Techdesigner.ru , Behanceand a bunch of all sorts of specialized hubs, small blogs of individual designers, forums. And most importantly, the social network Vkontakte, as many as there are there, if you dig, it tears your brain on the very first day. Importantly, many web designers working in their niche are not even interested in web technologies, trends or general understanding, for example: How will my layout be laid out? And moreover, they do not control the final layout (if we are talking about a freelancer). They draw absolutely thoughtlessly, without adapting layouts. Here you can read the requirements for the PSD layout that you send for layout. And here we turn to the last point - this is practice and experience. This is necessary in order to do all of the above quickly. There is a tendency to increase speed, an increasing number of customers need yesterday.

Design. You need to read books on the topic, not sell layouts.
