What's the difference between memchache & memchached?

I want to understand caching, understand what it is and how to use it, and already at the first stage the question is, what is the difference between memchache & memchached, and is there any?
What caching is used in the latest versions of CMS Joomla & WordPress?

memcache is a stripped-down version of the memcached protocol. For simple cases, the first is enough, the second if you know what you need from it. memcached is a bit slower. In general, the differences are easily googled.
