What programming language to choose to learn?

Recommend a programming language to learn. I know a little php, not enough to write a complex project.
I want to learn a powerful language for writing applications, which is now promising and relevant in the next 2-3 years (then I can probably change the PL). There are no familiar programmers, so I can not consult with anyone on this matter.
I am finishing my 1st year at the university, I copy labs, but I understand some points (we write in C ++). And so I decided to specifically engage in programming, and write applications myself.
What path would you recommend?
