What precautions to take?

I read a lot about ransomware - a lot of questions have come up, since they are thematically related to asking them in one topic.

  1. What strategy of protection to choose? Who will advise what?
    • And from common viruses
    • and from cryptographers

  2. What " prospects " await in the future? (capacity will increase and become more accessible and ransomware will cease to be a threat and vice versa)
  3. Particularly interested in the moment, how to set up your work environment for a normal win-user?
    • Backups?
    • On a separate train or in the cloud?
    • Cloud from companies or your own?

  4. What data leaks are really worth worrying about?

The only way to protect yourself is to make regular backups of all your critically important data.
Set them up automatically, depending on the amount of data, or a second screw in your computer, or in the cloud.
Make archives with a non-standard extension (such files are often skipped) and with a password if you do not store them with yourself.
Once a month, transfer your backups to a separate screw in the closet, which is definitely not online.

if you are afraid of a leak, then it is better to work with such information by starting from lifeCD, and, accordingly, store it on an external hard drive
