There is also a problem in the screen size - on my netbook, some Ubuntu dialog boxes (ubuntu 12.04) do not fit on the height of the screen.
And so ubunta works quite well on it, but I would recommend ubuntu with XFCE or another more "compact", in terms of the size of the interface elements, DE.

Alas, you didn't say the model.
But I would generally recommend going in an interesting direction and trying to install phoenix os
This is andorid for x86 systems. If she suddenly starts up in the car and understands the hardware, wifi, sound, video - then it’s a great option for me!
From linux Linux Lite , All sorts of puppy and tiny are too truncated as for me. As an LXL option

Any distribution with LXDE/LXQT on board. If the netbook has> 1GB of RAM, then you can try with XFCE.

If you are a complete noob (sorry) do not know what a console is, etc., and you need something beautiful, install - OS Elementary. If you are an advanced user, then install Arch.
