And then domain-specific literature (for me it became Hacking Secret Ciphers with Python )

If you have a mathematical mindset, then it is better to start with the Handbook of Applied Cryptography (Menezes, Oorshot, Vanstone)

The basics of cryptography and history are well described in the book by
Zhelnikov S. "Cryptography from Papyrus to Computer"
