Take Java or .NET. And write a multi-threaded client-server chat with a GUI. It is possible with SQLite base. The task is simple and is done in a week, if a beginner. There are quite a few possibilities for refactoring.

application programming

In my understanding, this is writing code that implements business logic. If you are interested, then learn all sorts of finances and go to the bank or somewhere else.
If you just want to write interesting code, I advise you to look at Java and Spring.
Demanded, interesting, quite difficult, you can write any applications.

Applied - it is applied because it is attached to something. And the choice of language is determined precisely by what this programming is applied to. If for robotics - then C / ASM, if game development - C ++ / C # ... Well, yes, it's useless to list everything, it's better to decide on the application area first.

D definitely. Like C# only without being tied to a virtual machine.
