"Charles Petzold Code - The Secret Language of Computer Science".
It will give principles from the invention of relays to modern processors.
Next:
"E. Tanenbaum - Computer Architecture"

"E. Tanenbaum - Networks"

There was a good book written by Mikhail Guk. It's called "IBM PC Hardware". The latest edition is from 2008. Somewhat outdated, but not radically, 80% of what is described there is still used. It is unlikely to be found in digital form, but on some bookstores it is possible.
