After updating my Windows 10, I discovered a new Windows Script Host application that can open .js files. Why is it needed? What is it eaten with? What is the functionality? Is it worth it to figure it out or is it just cool garbage for Winda's guru?

Think of it as the forerunner of PowerShell. I see no reason to understand it, tk. there is PowerShell.
The fact that it is hung up on opening js files is a historical accident. Those scripts were indeed in a dialect of JS, but that doesn't mean it makes sense to try to "run" or open any JS file with that Script Host. This all goes back to the time when VBScript bothered people no less than JS.
