It's not really a topology, but rather a technology. In short, to prevent "loops" in the network. Sometimes used to reserve links. Everything is described in sufficient detail: xgu.ru/wiki/STP

In short - protection against loops, i.e. a packet arriving at one port of the switch somehow (stupidly) comes back to this switch (which forms a loop)
