The Aveb company blog has an excellent article on methods for promoting content projects (media and blogs). In particular, there are a lot of sensible tips on developing the structure and optimizing the site.

It depends on how much information you plan to publish per day, what audience the site is designed for, how advertising will be served. For me, the ideal news site is a one column site with 5-10 types of news such as an event, a full article, a gallery, just one photo with a caption, a video, etc.

Above is a panel with individual topics, on the left is "hot", on the right is a little necessary information (on news sites this is the course, weather, etc.), in the center is the news itself. The main thing is that nothing superfluous is evident.
