What is the net domain zone now?

I came up with a cool site name, but it is occupied in the ru and com domain zones . In the future I plan to translate the site into foreign languages, so it is preferable to take an international domain. Having searched a little among the international domain zones, I found out that the net domain is not busy . I have never worked with this domain zone, so I have some questions.

On all sites about domains they write something like this:

The NET domain was originally intended for web resources dedicated to the development of the Internet and for sites of various companies and organizations whose activities were directly related to the Internet.

Although some emphasize what the separation is in the past and the net domain zoneperceived as simply international. My site is in no way associated with the development of the Internet. Can search engines erroneously attribute it to this category and what threatens it? Can a domain in this zone compete with com and ru sites ?

There is currently no thematic coloring for this domain. It's just international, everything will be fine.
But in general I recommended that the domain name differed not only in the domain zone. Otherwise, people can make a mistake and end up on someone else's site.
