Well, if I got stuck in a dispute, I will also write an answer.
There are different tasks, ranging from a desktop workstation to various server tasks.
I will not write about the desktop, install ANY distribution kit you like with a default graphical shell - this will be the set of the most popular software. For example, I am writing from a laptop with ubuntu (the laptop is a good, stylish and expensive ultrabook asus ux391), everything works as it should.
But further - everything is more interesting. For small installations, the standard LAMP set is suitable - Linux, Apache (Nginx), MySQL (PostgreSQL), PHP.
For communication with screw machines - Samba.
Never install FTP (!!!) - use ssh / sftp - they are in the standard set, it's safer and more versatile.
Containerization like Docker/LXC/Kyberners and KVM/XEN virtualization are very popular right now. What is better here - I will not say, I use both. For fast things - containers, for separation - KVM.
The bases are different and Mysql and Postgres, the latter is nicer and can do much more, but not everyone can, alas. I prefer Redis / MongoDB / Kafka / Hbase / Elasticsearch but everything is for the task.
Of the web servers, I prefer Nginx, but there are products that are tailored to work with Apache.
For firewall settings, each distribution has rule generators - in ubuntu this is ufw. I use firehol.
Ask - I will add to the list.
Now the software that performs the tasks is most often used.
