What is the IR transmitter to control the air conditioner?

We are looking for an IR transmitter with a USB or RS232 interface, preferably with drivers for FreeBSD (but lin / win will do) operating in the frequency range required to control the air conditioner.

For some reason it seemed to me that almost any IR transmitter can do this, at one time the most ordinary transmitter from a computer controlled everything that was in the room with a remote control. Here it seems to me that the frequency range is not important, but the control codes, as far as I remember.
