What is the difference between responsive and adoptive design?

Hello! I really need clarification on the difference between responsive and responsive design. Prior to this, I did not make separate layouts for mobile for the responsive option. I mean, I only do PSD. And now I did it and, apparently, I understand something wrong - the client says that I give him an adaptive design, not a responsive one. Can someone clearly say what can and cannot be done when creating a responsive layout?
For example, is it possible to hide some of the elements, change their characteristics, location, etc.?
