What is the difference between column store row store?

I just can’t understand what are the main differences between a column store and a row store. In the first one, the data is divided into columns and these columns can be on different servers? Or how? And row store turns out there will be some slices of the type from 1 to 100 in one table, then from 100 to 200 in another?
