What is the difference between a volume and a partition in diskpart? I want to assign a letter to a partition, but it doesn't see it as a volume. On linux it mounts fine.

A partition is an area of a disk that has certain boundaries.
A volume is an area of a disk with a file system.

I want to assign a letter to a partition, but it doesn't see it as a volume.

You cannot assign a letter to a partition.
