What is the difference between a request and a transaction?

I often hear the word transaction in programming, but I don’t understand what it means.
The description doesn't make it very clear what it is either.
It looks like a normal request, but then why call a normal request a transaction.

A transaction can contain multiple requests.
The transaction is atomic, a normal request is not necessary.
