What is the best way to keep software up to date in docker containers?

Good afternoon!
The question is how best to update software in containers and generally keep the system up to date?
Should I go inside the container and perform apt upgrade (for example) or is it more correct to rebuild the container via docker-compose and forward data from physical directories?
