What is the best way to compress photospheres?

There is a service designed for storing panoramic photos, which will have to compress photos whose size will exceed a certain threshold. I would like to know if there are any features of compressing such photos, and if so, which ones? Is it generally justified to compress such photos in the first stages of the service? Compression will be done in Python.
