What is the best position to start from?

Hello, in the future I want to become a game designer, and now I am faced with a choice of where to try to get a job in a company. Since no one will take a person from the street to the position of a game designer, regardless of his knowledge and skills. I have two options to get a position as a tester or programmer. What option do you think will help you realize yourself as a game designer in the future?

Better start with level design and scripting. At least my familiar game designers started that way.
