What is the best engine for developing 2D sandbox games?

What is the best engine for developing 2D Sandbox games like Terraria or Starbound? It will be very cool if the engine supports C# or C++ . I know about Unity3D . I tried to do it on it, it didn’t work out - lags with a large number of objects.

I advise you to just understand the unit. You have crooked hands, and the engine is to blame.

If you have more knowledge of C++, then choose Unreal or Coconut (Unreal is better). I also make a platform game on it like Terraria. If you know C #, then I use Unity personal edition.

Unreal Engine is still there. Well, or a tryhard mod, a self-written engine.
