What is the best archiver to compress virtual machine images? Or several in series? What algorithms are still applicable (snapshots, etc.)?
VDI, VMDK, HDD images, etc.
Compression is important. Time and resource intensity do not matter.

first you need to disable swap in the machines, delete temporary files and wipe the free space with zeros (there are utilities, I don’t remember the name)
compress 7zip with options -m0=lzma2 -mx9 -ms=on

depends on what data you have on virtual machines, so everyone knows how not to archive an empty space, and if you have 100 gigs of jeeps there, don’t press them all the same eggs in the profile.
