In general, the syntax between Matlab and Octave is the same.
In Matlab each function is in its own file, in Octave everything can be in one file.
For large calculations, Matlab outperforms Octave in speed.
When working with graphs, Matlab has some implementations of its own. In Octave, you could use gnuplot right away. I liked the result of the second one better.
It is more user friendly.
It is distributed free of charge in good universities and is taught on it.
It is easier to find examples of ready-made solutions for it.
