What is Open Source software for recording video from a webcam to a server?

The task is this. I have a system. I need to be able to record webcam video and audio on my system and save it to the server. Ideally, if it will be written in one file.
It is also not necessary, but it is desirable that there be some editors for editing the recorded video under this software. This should all be done on the web.
Advise what tool can be used to solve this problem.

Look towards VLC. I did a broadcast from a webcam to a site through it. There is definitely a recording there, but I had problems with segmenting it (any normal registrar divides the recorded video by date / hour, there is no such thing in standard VLC).
