What is @lastID in this entry: SET @lastID := LAST_INSERT_ID()?

Haven't come across this yet.
And another question: does LAST_INSERT_ID() take the value of the last updated row? Not inserted, but updated.

This is a variable that can be used in further queries. No, it only takes the value of the last inserted row.
